Louis Lortie pairs Beethoven’s intimate Op. 49, No. 1 with the monumental Op. 106 “Hammerklavier,” one of the most formidable works ever written for piano. The contrast is striking: Lyrical simplicity alongside symphonic scale and architectural daring.
