Praised for their “huge range of dynamics, massive sound and spontaneity” (American Record Guide), the Viano String Quartet won First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition and top prizes at the Osaka and Wigmore Hall International Chamber Music Competitions. Formed in 2015 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where they are Ensemble in Residence, the Viano has performed with world class musicians such as pianists Emanuel Ax and Elisso Virsaladze, violist Paul Coletti, and violinist/violist Martin Beaver.
Canadian violinist and violist Martin Beaver was first violin of the world-renowned Tokyo String Quartet. As such, he appeared to critical and public acclaim on the major stages of the world including New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, the Berliner Philharmonie, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. A laureate of the Queen Elisabeth, Montreal and Indianapolis Competitions, Mr. Beaver most recently served as Artist in Residence at the Yale School of Music and currently serves on the faculty of the Colburn Conservatory.
In a tradition stretching back to 1989 when the St Lawrence String Quartet won the Banff International String Quartet Competition, we are thrilled to present 2019 co-winners Viano String Quartet with their esteemed teacher and coach, Martin Beaver.
