Profiled by CBC Q, The National, Discovery Channel, and the Toronto Star (“one of the most attention-grabbing concerts of the year”), the JUNO-nominated Afiara Quartet continues to expand what it means to be a performing ensemble in the 21st century. Founded in 2006, the award winning ensemble has been described as “a revelation” (La Presse) with performances balancing “intensity and commitment” and “frequent moments of tenderness” (Montreal Gazette). Afiara has held residencies at The Juilliard School and San Francisco State University, and Fellowship Ensemble at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Afiara is also winner of the Young Canadian Musicians Award and Concert Artist Guild, in addition to 2nd Prizes at Munich ARD, and Banff International String Quartet Competitions.
For this concert, Afiara will be performing with James Campbell, clarinet, and Graham Campbell, guitar. James Campbell has been called “Canada’s pre-eminent clarinetist and wind soloist, by the Toronto Star, “Canada’s premiere clarinetist” by the Ottawa Citizen and “a national treasure” by the CBC. As for his son, Graham Campbell, he has been described as a “gifted guitarist and composer” (The Whole Note). Graham’s experience in jazz, pop, folk, world, and chamber music has taken him to many major festivals across North America and Europe including the Festival of the Sound and The Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. This talented father, son duo, along with Afiara quartet will bring our audience an unforgettable performance featuring Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet, Alland Gilliland’s “Klezinet”, Dinuk Wijeratne’s “Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems”, plus a couple more pieces that are yet to be revealed!
